LEARN HOW TO KICK

Our program is focussed not only on learning how to kick but on delivering a product that gives the best possible chance of becoming elite.  On both sides of the body.  In fact, the learning is often quicker with the non-preferred side of the body.

Understand How Skill Improves Decision Making

The biggest barrier to making good decisions on the football field is a lack of skill.  Particularly on both sides of the body.  When exiting a stoppage.  It's important to be able to turn in any direction that benefits the team.

The video is a comparison of Sam Mitchell to Sam Lonergan with respect to skill execution and decision making.

What Constitutes an Elite Kick

This short video explores the different types of kicks used in Australian Football and settles on the 30m low-trajectory running kick as the most difficult kick to perform.

The video discusses the biomechanical principles that govern the kicking action and introduces key technique elements.

Non-kicking Exercises

Perhaps the most important section of the learning process.

​

This short video discusses key biomechanical elements; such as, ball-lift, balance-arm, ball-guide, and the hand-tilt.

​

The video then introduces a key exercises for engraining those elements into the kicking action.

Start Kicking the Football

Once the non-kicking exercises have been mastered it's then time to start kicking the football.

Start with stationary kicking into a net as well as 5m low-trajectory kicks with a partner.

Using a net is a great tool when learning to kick as it shifts the focus to technique as opposed to the result.

Increase the Difficulty of the Kicks

This short video will introduce the viewer to key biomechanical discussion points such as; landing on the kicking-foot, and stride pattern.

The video provides exercises on how to implement the a fluent stride-pattern, culminating with an exercise to practice in order to execute the ideal kick.

Remediation

A key element of the development process is the ability to understand and pin-point areas for improvement.  

​

Reflecting on every single kick and critiquing against the technique requirements will help speed up the learning process.
